snowingplaces answers one question for people about to travel: is it going to snow where I'm going? It covers 100 ski resorts and 2 snowy cities, in plain language.
Who runs it
snowingplaces is run by Matt, who has skied and snowboarded in Andorra, France, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, New Zealand and the Himalayas.
What the site does
Most snow forecasts give you one number from one weather model. snowingplaces compares three models for every place, tells you what they agree on, and shows a range where they differ. When temperatures are near freezing and the models cannot agree on rain or snow, the forecast says so rather than guessing. Forecasts are rebuilt every three hours.
Each ski resort has a forecast for the top lift and another for the village, because the two are often different. Each place also has a ten-year record of when it usually snows, which is more use than a forecast when you are booking months ahead.

How we handle facts
Elevations, piste lengths, lift counts and season dates are only published when they can be traced to a source, and the sources are listed at the foot of each page. Where a fact cannot be sourced, it is left out rather than estimated. Pages show the date their facts were last checked once that check has been done.
Snow depth on this site is a model estimate, not a measurement. For conditions on the pistes, use the resort's own snow report, which each resort page links to where we have it.
Where the data comes from
Weather data is provided by Open-Meteo, from the ECMWF IFS, NOAA GFS and DWD ICON models. The snow record is calculated from the ERA5 reanalysis produced by ECMWF for the Copernicus Climate Change Service.
